   トニー･パーソンズによる3作目の小説『Man and Wife』は、ベストセラーとなったデビュー作『Man and Boy』の続編にあたる。前作同様、著者自身をモデルにしたかのような、ノース・ロンドンのテレビ番組プロデューサー、感傷的なハリー･シルヴァーが結婚生活と子育てに奮闘する姿を描く。

   大西洋をはさんで息子と離ればなれになり、ペギーの「新しい父親」になろうと格闘していたころ、ハリーは古きよき時代の「普通の家庭」というもの、つまり愛する母と亡き父が育んだ類の家庭というものにあこがれを抱くようになる。そして、ジーナの友人で魅力的な日本人写真家、カズミこそ、彼の願いをかなえてくれる女性だと思い…。

   男の弱さと現代の子育ての難しさを描くことは、パーソンズの得意とするところ。しかし本書は、時折ほろりとさせながらも、ひねりすぎのプロット、想像を越えたほどの自負心、感傷的な反動主義の香りが強すぎる感じがある。それでも、パーソンズのファンが失望する可能性はなさそうだ。あえてスター･ウォーズにたとえるならば、『帝国の逆襲』というよりは、むしろ『エピソード2　クローンの攻撃』といった作品だ。（Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk）
