   ロアルド・ダールの作品は想像力豊かで、登場するキャラクターたちもみな実にゆかいだ。読んで聞かせる親も飽きることはないし、子どもたちも何度も「読んで！」とせがんでくるだろう。本書をペーパーバック版として復刻するにあたっては、レーン・スミス（『The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairy Stupid Tales』や『The True Story of the Three Little Pigs』のイラストレーター）の手による白黒の鉛筆画が新たに書き加えられた。ディズニー社によるアニメ映画は、本書のイラストをもとに製作されている。これだけは断言できる――『James and the Giant Peach』（邦題『おばけ桃の冒険』）は児童文学の最高傑作だ。（9～12才児向け）
