   すでに、データベースのデファクトスタンダードの1つとなっているPostgreSQL。本書は、その開発コア・メンバー6人の1人であるブルース・モムジャンが自ら書き下ろした入門書である。

   本書は、大きく2つに分けることができる。１つは本書の前半にあたる、第1章から第20章までの解説、そしてもう1つは、本書の約半分をまるまる割いた「付録」である。

   本書の一番の特徴は、後戻りをせずに理解していくことができる点だ。最初の第1章～第7章あたりにかけては、必要最小限のコマンドやデータ型を用いて、PostgreSQLの基本操作に慣れることを最優先している。これが中盤の第8章あたりになると、次第に内容的に高度になっていくのだが、すでにそれまでの章で読者は基本を理解しているので、比較的すんなりと入っていけるようになっている。このあたりの知識の与え方のバランスは、相当検討を重ねた結果のように思われる。また、極力難しい言い回しを避けている点にも好感が持てる。

   また、本書後半の「付録」には、FAQやコマンドマニュアルが記載されていて、読者の理解が高まった際、本書前半で生じた疑問をすぐにここで解消することができる。これはインターネット上でも入手できるものではあるが、この資料の存在は、ユーザビリティを考えると、本書の完成度を一層高めているといえるだろう。いわゆる「付録」が書籍の半分を占めるのは異例ではあるが、リファレンスとしての側面のほかに、「ここから先は自力で使いこなしていってほしい」という著者のメッセージが込められているように思える。

   本書は、あくまで初心者向けに概念を中心に書かれたものであり、現場で即、参考となる性格のものではない。また、インストールやサーバーの設定についても詳細な記述はないので、PostgreSQLが使用できる環境にいる、学生や企業のニューカマーに適した入門書といえる。（大脇太一）
