   一世を風靡（ふうび）した『聖書の暗号』の文庫版。聖書を「予言書」としてとらえ、イスラエルのラビン首相の暗殺を予言したとする著者の問題作だ。要は旧約聖書の文字の中から、ある単語が出現する文字の間隔をはじき出し、その文字の間隔で聖書の文字を並べ替えると、関連する単語が周囲から見つかり予言をなすというものである。

   このように、聖書の中に予言などのいわば「秘儀」が隠されているという発想は古くからあり、カバリストと呼ばれた神秘学者らが多くのアプローチを試みてきた。そしてドロズニンらが行ったアプローチはまさにコンピュータが存在すればこそなし得た技である。実際に過去に起こったことが見事に予言されていることや、聖書という書物の特殊性もあって、なかなかおもしろい。

   最も注目されるのは、このアプローチの妥当性と、未来の予言という点だろう。実のところヘブライ語の特徴として数字と文字が一緒の記号であることや聖書では子音表記のみで母音表記がないことなどから比較的意味のある言葉を構成しやすいということがいえる。また未来の予言については本書でも「ハルマゲドン」というお決まりの文言が登場してくるが、これに関してドロズニンらが予言を発見したが成就はしなかった。そのとき彼は「延期」の文字を見つけたとしている。そして未来は変えられると解説している。

Drosnin was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal who turned into the Jeanne Dixon of the Middle East after "predicting" Rabin's assassination a year before it happened. Since then, with the help of mathematicians, he's been finding the bleak Future all over the Torah: an earthquake in L.A. (2010), a meteor hitting the Earth (2006, 2010, 2012, or all of these), and, of course, nuclear Armageddon (2000 or 2006). But don't write 2006 off yet, because the book says that the Code doesn't predict the Future, it merely reveals one possible future. Hmm. The Bible Code is this generation's The Late, Great Planet Earth. For those in the market, it delivers.
