   イアン・マキューアンの『Atonement』はブッカー賞ノミネート作品。1998年ブッカー賞受賞の処女作『Amsterdam』（邦題『アムステルダム』）に続く待望の新作だ。だが短く優美にまとめられた前作に比べ、『Atonement』は壮大なスケールの長篇小説。その随所にマキューアンの遊び、こだわり、実験が感じられる野心作である。

   時は1935年の夏、物語は13歳の少女ブライオン・タリスがロマンス劇「アラベラの試練」を書き上げた場面から始まる。それは愛する兄レオンの帰郷を祝して書いた特別な作品だった。だが美人のローラ、双子のジャクソンとピエロら従弟たちは、この劇の上演にあまり乗り気ではなく、ブライオンの創作意欲も薄れていく一方だ。彼女がセンセーショナルな事件に遭遇したのはそんなある暑い日のことだった。裸で庭の噴水に飛び込む姉セシリアの姿を見たのだ。どうやらタリス家に仕える掃除婦の息子ロビー・ターナーが、姉の服をむりやり脱がせたらしい。おまけに彼は姉にみだらな手紙を送りつけてきたのである。

   一方兄レオンは、見栄えはしないが金持ちの男をタリス家に連れてくる。チョコレート会社を経営するその男は、新たな戦争を機に新商品「弾丸チョコレート・バー」を売り込もうと画策していた。さらにタリス家の2階寝室では、いつも偏頭痛に悩まされている母エミリーがあらゆる動きに目を光らせていた。やがてタリス家に集まった彼らの秘密が明らかになり、全員の運命を変えていくことになる。

   両大戦にはさまれた時代の、比較的裕福な中流家庭を舞台にした第1部の巧みな筆致は、ヴァージニア・ウルフやヘンリー・グリーンを彷彿とさせる。だが物語が21世紀直前まで進み、メインテーマがしだいに明らかになるにつれ、そこにはほとんど独壇場ともいえるマキューアンの世界が織り成されていく。『Atonement』は文芸作品創作にともなう喜びや痛み、危うさを主眼とした小説だが、作品に対する読者の理解を意のままに操ろうとした実験作ともいえる。少なくとも本書でマキューアンが苦もなく読者の気持ちを掌握したことは間違いない。本書は実に意義深く刺激的であると同時に感動的な1冊。読者の賞賛が約束された傑作である。（Alan Stewart, Amazon.co.uk）

The interwar, upper-middle-class setting of the book's long, masterfully sustained opening section might recall Virginia Woolf or Henry Green, but as we move forward--eventually to the turn of the 21st century--the novel's central concerns emerge, and McEwan's voice becomes clear, even personal. For at heart, Atonement is about the pleasures, pains, and dangers of writing, and perhaps even more, about the challenge of controlling what readers make of your writing.
