   著者は『レッド・オクトーヴァーを追え』などでも知られるアメリカのハイテクスリラー作家、トム･クランシー。この「ネットフォース　エクスプローラーズ」シリーズは、前シリーズ「ネットフォース」の姉妹編ともいうべき、ネットフォース予備軍の高校生たちの活躍を描くシリーズで、本書はその第1弾。

 「仮想空間」内で行われるファンタジー系戦争ロールプレイングゲーム「サークソス」で、有力プレイヤーたちの記録が何者かによって消去される事件が続発。ついには現実世界で襲撃を受け、意識不明に陥るプレイヤーが出るまでに事態はエスカレートする。これを受けてエクスプローラーズのメンバーである2人の高校生が、犯人を突きとめるべく自らプレイヤーとなってゲームの世界に入りこむ。

   「IT社会への警鐘を鳴らす作品」という、うたい文句が付されているが、中世ヨーロッパ的世界観のもとに構築されたゲーム内世界の描写の綿密さに比べると、現実世界の描写が弱く、割かれている量も少ない。そのため、バーチャルな世界で受けた遺恨が現実で果たされる、というプロットではあるものの、そのことの恐怖や戦慄がかきたてられる作りとはいいがたく、ハイテクスリラーやサイバーパンク好きにはやや物足りなく感じられるかもしれない。ファンタジー小説やRPGのノベライズの愛好者には、じゅうぶん楽しめる小説となっている。（岡田工猿）

One of the most favored of these virtual realities is a medieval war game called Sarxos.
