   関ヶ原の戦いは、その後300年以上も続く平和な江戸時代へのきっかけとなる、今でいえば世界最終戦争のような戦争である。本書の「前書き」にあるのだが、宮本武蔵には、若いころにこの戦に参戦した経験があるらしい。

   それを知ったうえで読むと、武蔵の『五輪書』には平時に生きざるを得なかった有能な荒武者の、屈折に満ちた自己述懐という一面が感じられる。否定命令文で占められた過剰に禁欲的な「独行道」の文体や極度に倫理的な内容に、たとえば西欧の騎士道に見られる明るく開放的なダンディズムとは無縁な、暗い境遇の不幸を感じるのだ。武蔵の武芸者としての真骨頂が「実戦」にあり、端的に言って「戦場における公明正大な人殺し」にあったのだとすれば、彼の絵や彫刻は本来の才能の屈折した表現なのかもしれず、だとすれば『五輪書』が、敗戦を経験し戦後の高度成長を支えた企業人たちの間で、主にビジネス書として読まれてきた消息も合点がいくのである。

   とはいえ、以上は単なる内向きの述懐にすぎないこともまた事実だ。日本の文物が、外からの新規なまなざしによって新たな息吹を獲得するのはよくあることで、近くは寺山修司の「天井桟敷」に代表される前衛演劇や、「山海塾」などのいわゆる舞踏がそうだった。その意味で、本書のもつ価値は出版後の外の評価によってこそ明かになるのかもしれない（今野哲男）
